The responsibility of the "artistic gesture." Fraternity may be felt on the
part of the individual, but it doesn't naturally translate. And the question
of the "natural" is critical here. Everyone seems to rely on it: I'm
naturally "American," naturally "female," naturally "Shiite," naturally
"queer," naturally "Tamil," and so on. Today's NY Times had a small piece on
Neanderthalers and their failure: because Neanderthals hunted ensemble, male
and female together, they failed as a species. Neanderthals hunted together
rather than splitting labor according to a hunting/gathering paradigm. And
hence, the (new?!) theory goes, they failed. Science once again inscribes
ideology--in the same week that the lesbian fire-chief in Minnesota is
brought down by sexual harassment cases...

The problem with Bracha Ettinger's posts is not the issue of copyright but
the claim to content, and further, the claim to image-content unmodified by
language. Ownership may be, in some systems, reprehensible; but presumption
itself is reprehensible in many more. The "neutral" HERE--the
unspoken--presumes possession.
